We read the documents everyone else summarises.

Most coverage stops at the announcement. A government says it has signed something, a company issues a release, a leader posts a number, and the story gets written from the press release. The interesting part is almost always in the filing underneath it: the exemption list, the ratification status, the footnote about who actually pays.

That is where we start. Federal registers, statistical releases, trade agreement texts, corporate disclosures, court rulings. We chase the figures nobody quotes and check the ones everybody does.

Sometimes that means a story looks smaller than the headline suggested. Sometimes it means the opposite, and a number buried on page eleven turns out to be the whole thing.

When we get something wrong, we say so.
